Everything Comes Together in the Spring

Hello! I’m thrilled to introduce myself—I'm Lauren, the youngest of the Harding trio. I’ve decided to step into Paige’s space to share my thoughts on a topic that resonates deeply with many: change. It can be daunting, but I’ve learned that embracing it often leads to growth. Transitioning from a small town to a large university was probably the most challenging adjustment I’ve ever experienced.

One day last fall, during my very first semester of college, I was on a phone call with my mom where I was anxiously venting about my current transition to college. Telling her the hardships of balancing a social life and demanding classes, attempting to make a new city feel like home, making new friends, and overall adjusting to a new climate (literally - Northeast Kansas is humid!). She imparted a piece of advice that still sticks with me: “Everything comes together in the spring.”

I realized I should pay closer attention when my mom shares her wisdom because, honestly, she’s right most of the time (love you, Mom!).

This quote is more than just a saying; it encapsulates the essence of patience and hope. It reminds us that, though we may face challenges and uncertainties, everything eventually falls into place. For those freshmen who are currently making the transition to college - if it's tough right now, I promise you it will be better in the spring. As you navigate through your own changes, hold onto that wisdom. Embrace the journey, and trust that brighter days are ahead. Especially if, like me, you transitioned to a university with more students enrolled than the population of your hometown!

The Challenge of Transition

Arriving on campus is akin to entering a new world—a colorful mix of different experiences, viewpoints and aspirations. Whether you end up on a big campus or small, this new home may leave you feeling tiny and out of place.

The first few weeks can feel like a whirlwind. Classes stretch before you like a never ending maze, each syllabus a new puzzle waiting to be solved. The anticipation that once overwhelmed you may quickly morph into an unsettling anxiety. The laughter of new friends echos in the halls, yet you may find yourself longing for the familiar warmth of home—a comforting embrace, the smell of your favorite meal wafting from the kitchen, or even just needing a drive down the same country roads you grew up on.

Coming from a small town, the overwhelming hustle and bustle of a big city can often make you yearn for the simplicity and comfort of home. However, it’s essential to embrace this discomfort as a natural part of the journey. Some of the best advice I ever received is that you’re not alone - every other person is likely feeling the exact same way, whether you know it or not. Allow yourself to sit with those feelings of uncertainty; this is where growth emerges.

The Importance of Putting Yourself Out There

To combat the uncertainty, throw yourself into the unknown. Attend every class not merely as obligations, but as opportunities. Opportunities to not only learn something new, but to meet a new friend or find a new passion. Engage with your professors, ask questions, and seek out the stories that lie beneath the surface of textbooks.

But don’t stop there—venture beyond the classroom. Join clubs that pique your interest, attend campus events, and seek out the threads that connect you to others. Each small step into the unknown is a chance to write your own narrative. With each encounter, you’ll find common ground, shared passions, and a sense of belonging that will anchor you - much like the tight-knit community of a small town.

Remember, every relationship begins with a simple “Hello!” You might find that the person sitting next to you in class has similar fears or dreams. Share a coffee, take a walk, and let the conversation flow. These connections will blossom into friendships that enhance your college experience.

The Gift of Time

As you go through all these changes, remember the gift of time. Adjusting to college life is not a race - it's more of a marathon. Allow yourself the grace to adapt, and don’t feel alone if it takes longer than originally anticipated.

The weight of academic pressure may feel heavy at times, but remember that growth is not measured solely by grades, or how many parties you attend. It’s found in the confidence you build, the friendships you create, and the experiences that shape you. Each challenge faced is a stepping stone, a lesson learned that will carry you forward.

When days feel overwhelming, take a moment to breathe. Seek solace in nature, find a quiet corner of the library, or take a trip to the coffee shop for a sweet treat. Recognize that it’s okay to retreat and recharge; self-care is essential.

Finding Your Rhythm

As the weeks turn into months, you’ll begin to find your rhythm within this new world.

College life is a delicate dance, balancing academics, social life, and personal time. Embrace the ebb and flow of your experiences; some days will be filled with joy and laughter, while others may feel heavy with responsibility. Never feel silly to want to retreat back to your roots every once in a while. A quick trip  home can help more than you know.

Reflecting on your small-town roots can ground you during this transition. Embrace the joy of new friendships and experiences, but also cherish the quiet moments that remind you of home. Finding that balance between the vibrant college life and your personal needs will help you thrive in this exciting journey.

Freshman year brings a blend of excitement and uncertainty. Embracing change opens doors to new adventures and personal growth. Each challenge is a chance to learn more about ourselves. So just remember, if you feel as if everything is crashing down on you, everything comes together in the spring.
